PRO-FAMILY

The Warkomski family has lived in Aliso Viejo for 14 years. They were one of the first residents to move into the Pacific Ridge Neighborhood, which is where they have been ever since. As a certified docent, Karl leads weekend hikes in our regional nature reserves, educating local families along the way. One of his primary goals is to preserve the last remaining open space in Orange County. If you are interested in attending one of the hikes, please contact him by email.

PRO-BUSINESS

Having owned and operated a locally based company he co-founded in 1994, Karl W is familiar with most aspects of business. Over the years, he has had to work within budgetary constraints, and manage dynamic individuals. He is committed to ensuring a business-friendly atmosphere in the new city, that will be the envy of the surrounding communities. Green Culture Inc. now resides at Verdugo & El Pacifico, in the City of Laguna Hills.

PRO-ENVIRONMENT

For years, Karl has been active in many local issues, including Aliso Creek Watershed, Aliso and Woods Canyon Wilderness Reserve, and enhancement of our suburban parks. He served for 7 years as an ex-officio volunteer on the Aliso Viejo Community Association's Park & Recreation Committee. Karl W helped update the 5-year Mater Park Plan, which will incorporate such amenities as: tennis courts, a doggie park, lighted sports fields, additional shade structures, and an interpretive xeriscape garden.

CURRENT ISSUES

Defeat El Toro Airport and Creation of The Great Park. As a new city, we now have a louder and stronger voice in the battle to defeat El Toro Airport, and in the design of The Great Park. The pro-park ballot drive was an overwhelming success, but this issue will never be completely over until the parcel are all sold off, starting late 2004.

Restoration of Aliso and Wood Canyon Creeks. The creeks within Aliso and Woods Canyon have been severely degraded; it will take regional cooperation and genuine resolve on the part of local residents to help repair the damage. Our watersheds contain vibrant riparian ecosystems - they can no longer be treated as toxic drainage ditches. The adjacent wilderness areas have recently been targeted by a golf course developer - we must vocalize our opposition often and early.

Recreation Facilities. The city had been working cooperatively with AVCA to help with the planning and development of badly needed community facilities within our park system. Funding for construction is currently being negotiated by the ad hoc committee, and no project has yet to be approved. Please attend council meetings for continual updates and ongoing debate.

Construction of a Full-Service Post Office. Long over due, with a city of our population. The local annexes are not always adequate in meeting the needs of local residents.

Participation in Regional Trail Connectivity Plans. Includes efforts to create corridors between reserves to the North (Dilley Reserve and Woods End Open Space) and the ocean and beaches to the South (access through the AWMA Road and Aliso Beach Golf Course).

Active Role in Regional Open Space Conservation. Karl serves on the Friends of Foothills steering committee - a local group committed to protecting the natural heritage of South Orange County, for the enjoyment of present and future generations of Californians. Their main focus is the 23,000 acres of open space off the Ortega Highway, which are slated for development.
